Print Journalism First Award
I have always envisioned myself pursuing a career in Journalism. There has never been a doubt in my mind that I would go into a print Journalism career because I have always been drawn to writing. I enjoy learning about new things and writing about what I have learned and how those things can affect others. I plan to become either an investigative journalist or a political journalist after college. I would like to have the opportunity to attain a position at the Washington Post or The New York Times as a journalist. While it may seem that any journalism major simply wants to work for these major entities and get their name out in the world, I am partial to these two news sources because their news stories are always written in such an enticing and interesting way. My aim as a journalist is to inspire others to seek out the truth and to learn more about the world around them. Print journalism and journalist have always been a major inspiration to me. As a child I always enjoyed reading different news articles and keeping up with the things happening around the globe. Now I would like to inspire others the way print journalism has always inspired me. My parents were both born in Mexico, currently they are both citizens of the United States. They like to stay well informed about the various events happening in Mexico and have always read different newspapers or print news sources to acquire
that information. It is for people like them who are searching for bits and pieces of information to better understand the word, that I hope to become an international investigative or political journalist.
The Knudson Churchill Scholarship would help me achieve these goals by giving me the opportunity to pay for the proper education I would require to be a quality journalist. Simply put, college is expense. There is a wide array of costs that accompany a proper college education and while I will attend college no matter the cost, I do not want to place the burden of my college expense anywhere near my parents. This scholarship would help me avoid taking out too many loans in their names and instead I would be able to pay for my education through my own merits. I plan to attend the University of Nebraska Lincoln with a major in Journalism. The University of Nebraska Lincoln has a great Journalism program and I am excited to attend this college to learn more about the career I have chosen for myself. As a Journalism major at the University of Nebraska Lincoln I will get the opportunity to work with wonderful and renowned professors. I will also get the chance to make some major connection within the Journalistic world. While studying at the University of Nebraska Lincoln I also plan to be a part of the Daily Nebraskan.
This is the student run newspaper at the University. This will allow me to properly hone my writing abilities and my ability to find and craft a well written article. The Knudson Churchill Scholarship could have a major impact on the types of classes I am able to take in the next year. This scholarship will help me as I make my decisions when it comes to picking classes in the fall. This is scholarship holds so much potential for me as a student and I plan to use it wisely if I do receive this scholarship.
As a student I believe I am an excellent candidate to be a Knudson Churchill Scholar. I have a great deal of experience writing through my various leadership positions at my school. I held the public relations position in my student council for two years and I am currently the president of the organization. This organization has been a big part of cultivating my love for journalism. My sophomore year of high school I got the opportunity to be the public relations officer. This position allowed me to write an article for our school's newsletter every month.
Writing these articles and creating a beautifully crafted piece of work made me realize how much I love to write about things happening around me. I am not only involved in this one activity. Since I attend high school at such a small school, I am involved in almost every activity at my school. I am currently a part of the student council, FBLA, speech team, drama, one-act, band, basketball, enrichment, class officer, reading classics sponsor, National Honor Society, and quiz bowl. Each of these different activities has taught me different lessons that I will take with me as I move forward into college and life after college. The interactions I have had through these organizations has made me a better speaker and it has made me more empathetic towards others. I believe that empathy is a principal factor in being a good journalist because to fully understand a story one must be able to empathize with those involved. Just being member of these activities has been enriching to my mind but, I also hold leadership positions within each organization and that has increased the effect each organization has had in my life. As I stated before I am the president of my student council, I am also the FBLA reporter, the captain of my speech team, senior class vice president, and the National Honor Society public relations officer. All of these leadership roles have cultivated my mind into a mindset that is prepared and willing to be a great journalist in the future. I believe that academically I am also a great candidate to be a Knudson Scholar academically. I have been in the top three of my class for the past four years. My G.P.A is a 3.9 and I work very hard to keep my grades up. Overall, I truly believe I would make a great Knudson Scholar. My experience in various activities, my scholastic achievements, and my leadership role at my high school have all prepared me to use my time at college wisely. I am ready and excited to attend the University of Nebraska Lincoln. This scholarship will give me the wonderful opportunity to further my education and to achieve all of the career goals I have set for myself. I am sincerely grateful for the wonderful opportunity you are giving to students to help further their education. Thank you for your considerations and for giving me the opportunity to help further my education in the Journalistic field.
